Night Photography Requires Some Different Photographic Techniques

This is a great time of year for night photography. From Jack-O-Lanterns to trick-or-treaters, to Christmas Lights and outdoor decorations, there’ll be plenty of night shots for you to take. But taking photos outside at night requires some different photographic techniques or you’ll end up with a bunch of dark frames in which you won’t be able to make out the subjects.

Shooting night photography is difficult because of the low light situation and possibly the glare from neon signs or similar bright objects like streetlights or even the moon. In some instances, using a lower ISO setting would improve the quality of your image. In some instances, a higher ISO setting would improve the overall outcome. Most professional photographers recommend using a tripod for night photography because it decreases motion or camera shake, which results in less noise in the image. This is one of the more simple photographic techniques that you can use to improve your nighttime photos.

Another simple thing you can do is to shoot the object from several different angles so that you can utilize any glow or ambient lighting that may exist. If your camera has an auto-focus setting, you might want to switch it to manual for night photography because it’s going to have difficulty auto-focusing in the dark and you can do a better job yourself. When taking photos at night, you should bracket your photos as it will help provide a better image. You might also want to review your camera’s histogram feature to see how to adjust your settings in order to take better images in the dark.
