Soon after photographers started drooling over the announcement of the Nikon D3, Sony released details of its new 24-megapixel sensor and started numerous rumors about the possibility of a higher resolution Nikon D3x in a year’s time. As with most rumors surrounding Nikon, a higher resolution top-end model will likely come, but not necessarily in the time period specified.

At any rate, the point is that the new Sony sensor excited a lot of people, especially as it will be used in the electronic company’s own top-end D-SLR. The previous record for a non-medium format sized sensor was the 21-megapixel Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III.
